Schuman: second phase of work starting January 8th
On January 8th 2024, the second phase of the redevelopment of the Schuman Roundabout will begin. This phase focuses on converting Avenue de la Joyeuse Entrée (between rue de la Loi and avenue de la Renaissance) into a two-way thoroughfare.
Planned work
Avenue de la Joyeuse Entrée (section between avenue de Cortenbergh and rue de la Loi):
- Establishment of a motorist bypass connecting avenue de Cortenbergh to avenue de la Joyeuse Entrée.
- Removal of trees with a commitment to replant them whenever feasible, as part of another project of Brussels Mobility and Brussels Mobilité or Bruxelles Environnement.
- Implementation of a two-way cycle lane by repurposing the existing parking area.
- Revitalization of the pavement on the building facade side.
Avenue de Cortenbergh:
- Redevelopment of the pedestrian and cycling area between the Belliard tunnel exit and Avenue de Cortenbergh.
- Removal of trees with a commitment to replant them whenever feasible, as part of another project of Brussels Mobility and Brussels Mobilité or Bruxelles Environnement.
During this phase, a survey and sounding operation will be conducted at the center of the roundabout as part of the construction process for the upcoming canopy.
Planning
It is estimated that this second phase will take around 23 weeks, concluding around June 2024.
We will keep you informed of developments in the phasing of the works in due course. Bad weather or unforeseeable circumstances may lead to changes in the changes to the schedule. For the most up-to-date information, please check our website.
Practical details
Following a request from the police, the reduction in traffic lanes in avenue de Cortenbergh and the roundabout is being maintained.
Avenue de la Joyeuse Entrée (between rue de la Loi and avenue de Cortenbergh) and the access to the tunnel leading to the E40 will be closed to traffic.
The following diversions will be implemented:
- Pedestrians: existing routes are maintained.
- Cyclists: diversions via rue de la Loi, the roundabout and avenue de Cortenbergh (contra-flow side lane)
- Motorists: diversions via avenue d'Auderghem or via rue de la Loi, the roundabout, rue Archimède, rue Franklin and rue Le Corrège
The southern part of Avenue de la Joyeuse Entrée is primarily used for local traffic. We recommend using the diversion route via Avenue d'Auderghem.
Access to shops and buildings for pedestrians and cyclists within the construction zone is guaranteed. Emergency services will have ensured access. In the construction zone, deliveries and movements are always possible after contacting the ombudsman.
The federal contracting authority, Beliris, and COLAS are both committed to minimising disruption and completing the work as quickly as possible.
For any practical questions or emergencies related to the works, please contact the ombudsman: Johan Van Laer - 0485 08 74 70.
