Redevelopment of the Schuman Roundabout
A urban agora
The Schuman Roundabout and its surroundings will look completely different. This emblematic site, at the heart of the European Quarter, will become a secure multimodal space and an urban agora promoting active mobility. Brussels Mobility conducted the studies and will transfer the project management to Beliris once the planning permission has been obtained.
General information & documentsProject description
Designed by Danish architects COBE and Brussels-based design office BRUT, this project aims to “breathe new life” into this emblematic crossroads of the Capital.
The general philosophy of the project is to create a central point around which mobility is organised in concentric circles. The circles widen across the entire surface to accentuate the central position of the site and encourage visitors to meet at its centre. The centre of the square is overlooked by a modern canopy combining metal and plant material, which can be used for events.
This roundabout dominated by car traffic is being turned into a pedestrian zone that is as green as possible, linking the Parc du Cinquantenaire and Rue de la Loi. The traffic plan will be adapted to make way for an area mainly devoted to active transport modes, except for the section between Avenue de Cortenbergh and Rue de la Loi.
This project benefits from a loan of 17,400,000 euros from the European Recovery Plan NextGenerationEU for the development of the public space and bike lanes..
For any practical questions or emergencies related to the works, please contact the ombudsman: Johan Van Laer - 0485 08 74 70.
